How a heat pump actually works

A furnace makes heat by burning gas. A heat pump does not make heat at all - it moves it. Here is the part that gets glossed over in a lot of heat-pump enthusiasm. In northern Illinois right now, natural gas is cheap relative to electricity. That matters.

During the coldest months, when a heat pump is at its least efficient and pulling more electricity, a gas furnace often still wins on pure operating cost. Gas is simply a lower-cost fuel per unit of heat here at the moment, and the furnace does not lose efficiency in the cold the way a heat pump does. In milder weather the heat pump is very competitive and often cheaper to run. Over a full season it depends on your rates, your home, and how cold the winter turns out to be.
